Beauty therapist & therapy courses

Across the UK, beauty therapists perform a wide range of treatments for the face and body including facials, makeovers, manicures, pedicures and hair removal.

Beauty therapists can increase their options by also training in areas such as aromatherapy, reflexology or massage.

In addition to providing treatments, beauty therapists will typically undertake a variety of other tasks including:

• Reception work
• Answering the telephone
• Checking and ordering supplies
• Dealing with money
• Cleaning the salon
  
  

There are no set entry requirements to train for a career in beauty therapy, and training usually involves a one-year or two-year course. Courses will typically combine some academic work with extensive placements and practical sessions.

Private schools offer an alternative route to training - their courses are usually shorter and more intense. There are a wide range of qualifications including:

• NVQ/SVQ levels 1 to 3 in B. Therapy
• NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Spa Therapy
• BTEC/SQA National Certificate/Diploma in B. Therapy Sciences
• City & Guilds Certificate/Diploma in B. Therapy
• ITEC Diploma for B. Specialists
• VTCT Certificate/Diploma in B. Therapy
• Foundation Degree in B. Therapy
• BTEC HNC/HND in B. Therapy Sciences.
