All swimming jobs require instructors to hold a teaching or coaching qualification - which one depends upon the level at which you wish to teach. The Amateur Swim Association (ASA) Level 2 Certificate for Teaching is the industry standard for those seeking paid employment as a swimming instructor.

There are lots of UK swimming instructor courses across the country, so look to your local pool first to see what may be on offer.

Entry requirements for swimming instructor courses are mostly age-based - you must be at least 16 for Level 1 and 18 for Level 2 - your first swimming job rung!.

The ASA offer the following qualifications :

• Helper Certificate - An introductory qualification which permits you to help with club or group activities under the supervision of a Level 2 coach. Covers strokes, diving, aquafit, synchronised, water polo and disabilities
  
  
• Level 1 Certificate for Teaching - Allows you to assist in teaching a limited range of basic skills
  
  
• Level 2 Certificate for Teaching - Allows you to teach up to 12 participants unsupervised
  
  
• Level 3 Club Coach - for those wishing to coach competitive performers in a club environment
  
  
• Level 3 Certificate for the Development and Management of Programmes - For those wishing to assist organisations to provide swim programmes
  
  
• Level 4 Coach - Permits you to coach at district and national level and to organize and manage a club development programme
  
  

Alternatively there are a range of programmes available through the The Swim Teachers Association (STA). These include courses for teachers in schools, and classes for aquatic aerobics teaching (aquacise).
